Nearly half of these 2,660 child victims were between 15 and 17. 1 in 5 child victims were known to be killed by another child. In most murders of a young child, a family member killed the child, while in most murders of an older child, age 15 to 17, the perpetrator was an acquaintance to the victim or was unknown to law enforcement authorities. 1976 - 1994 in family murder of a child 10% of victims were age 15 - 17, while in murders by strangers were 67% of victims were in this age category. 1 in 5 child murders were committed by a family member. Alyssa Bustamante is a 15-year-old from Missouri, who in 2009 murdered her 9-year-old neighbor, Elizabeth Olten. She strangled her and then stabbed her, when asked why she did it, she told the police she “wanted to know what it felt like.”

Under it was the body of Maddie, an eight-year-old neighbor. Phillips had accidentally hit her in the eye with a baseball; when she screamed, he panicked and dragged her to his house, where he beat and stabbed her to death. He pled not guilty but the jury didn’t believe him, and he was convicted of first degree murder.
