The Story of Konerak Sinthasomphone and Jeffrey Dahmer
Konerak was only fourteen and he was running for his life. This was his only chance to escape from the horrible-smelling apartment where the creepy blond guy had slipped him some kind of powerful drug. It seemed that luck was with him that he started to come around just as the blond man had left the apartment.
It took all the strength he had to get up and get to the door. He was so disoriented and panicked that it made no difference that he was naked. This was his only chance to survive. He was working strictly on instinct. Just get out of there and run away.
It was just before 2 A.M. and Sandra Smith called 911 to report the boy running around “butt naked.” She didn’t know who he was, but she knew he was injured and terrified.
The paramedics got there first and put a blanket around the naked, dazed boy. Two police officers arrived soon after and tried to understand what was going on with this young man of Asian descent.
Sandra Smith, 18, and her cousin Nicole Childress, also 18, were standing near the boy when the Milwaukee city police arrived. The tall blond man was also standing near the boy. The conversation became heated between the girls, the blond man and the police.
The tall blond man told the police the Konerak was his 19-year-old lover who had been drinking too much. Konerak, who was drugged and incoherent, wasn’t able to contradict the smooth-talking blond man. Dahmer gave the police a picture ID.
The two young women tried to intervene. They had seen the terrified boy trying to resist the blond man before the police arrived. They were angry and upset. The police were ignoring them and listening to the white man instead.
Just to be on the safe side, the two officers went with the boy and the tall blond man to his apartment. The apartment smelled bad, but it was very neat. Konerak’s clothing was folded and placed on the sofa. There were a couple of photographs of Konerak in black bikini briefs.
Konerak sat quietly on the sofa unable to talk intelligently. It’s not even clear that he understood the calm explanation the blond man was giving the police. The blond man was apologizing that his lover had caused a disturbance and promised it wouldn’t happen again.
The police believed the blond man. They had no reason not to — he was well-spoken, intelligent and very calm. The Asian was apparently drunk and incoherent. The officers, not wanting to get in the middle of a domestic argument between homosexual lovers, left the apartment with Konerak still sitting quietly on the sofa. In that neighborhood, the officers felt that there were more pressing things for them to do.

Jesse Pomeroy
Jesse Pomeroy was born in 1860. He was considered a natural born fiend. His crimes made this identification not unreasonable. Jesse was raised by his mother in South Boston. Not very much is known about his life before he was eleven years old. Thats when he started to torture other children. Between the winter/fall of 1871, Jesse trapped and attacked seven other younger boys. He’d take them to a hidden spot where he would strip them and tie them up. He severely beat some of the earlier victims, then he started to use a knife and even poked pins into ones flesh. Pomeroy had a cleft lip and a completely white eye, so identifying him would be pretty easy. After being caught he was sent to a reform school and was supposed to be there till he was twenty-one. He understood the idea that if he was good, he’d get let out early. He was released after only a year and a half. Now, instead of just wanting to inflict pain on others, he was homicidal. In March of 1874 he kidnapped a little girl and killed her, a month later he done the same to a four year old, but he was so severe on the boy that he nearly decapitated him. The police placed Jesse as the apparent killer. When they asked him if he killed the little boy (his body was the first to be found) Jesse replied “I suppose I did.” Pomeroy was only 14 at the time. Most people wanted him killed, but the governor wouldn’t go for it. He instead decided on giving him a lifelong sentence in solitary confinement. He spent forty-one years in solitary, before getting some contact with other inmates. He died in 1932 at the age of seventy-two.

Per a ruling by Geauga County Juvenile Court Judge Timothy Grendell on yesterday, seventeen year old TJ Lane will be tried as an adult in the school shooting deaths of three Chardon High School students. This conclusion was met following a hearing in which a sheriff’s deputy described how Lane had worn a T-shirt with the word “KILLER” printed on the front during the fatal February 27th shooting and admitted to having just “killed a bunch of people” upon apprehension. During an interview conducted by Sheriff’s deputy John Bilicik, Lane was pressed for a motive to which he responded, “I have no idea. I don’t really understand it myself.” At the time, he had no idea how many people he shot; he said that he was aiming for heads so they wouldn’t have to suffer. Bullying has been ruled out as a possible factor. “No one pissed me off,” Lane said. “I have no problem with people.”

Also during this hearing, details revealed that there are 54 cameras in and around Chardon High School. Camera 13 in the cafeteria caught the deadly shooting rampage on film. Media was ordered to leave the courtroom and did not see the footage. Prosecutors called the video “disturbing” and “graphic,” adding that it could “prejudice a potential jury at this point” if the media saw and released it.

Lane could get a life sentence if he is convicted; the state of Ohio does not allow minors to receive the death penalty. Had his case been routed to juvenile court, the maximum possible penalty would have kept him jailed until he turned 21. He will be held in the juvenile detention center until at least June 8th, giving attorneys time to file paperwork.

Hanging:
Prior to any execution, the gallows area trap door and release mechanisms are inspected for proper operation. The rope, which is of manila hemp of at least 3/4”and not more than 1 1/4”in diameter and approximately 30 feet in length, is soaked and then stretched while drying to eliminate any spring, stiffness, or tendency to coil. The hangman’s knot, which is tied pursuant to military regulations, is treated with wax, soap, or clear oil, to ensure that the rope slides smoothly through the knot. The end of the rope which does not contain the noose is tied to a grommet in the ceiling and then is tied off to a metal T-shaped bracket, which takes the force delivered by the offender’s drop.
Additionally, prior to an execution, the condemned offender’s file is reviewed to determine if there are any unusual characteristics the offender possesses that might warrant deviation from field instructions on hanging. A physical examination and measuring process is conducted to assure almost instant death and a minimum of bruising. If careful measuring and planning is not done, strangulation, obstructed blood flow, or beheading could result. At the appropriate time on execution day, the inmate, in restraints, is escorted to the gallows area and is placed standing over a hinged trap door from which the offender will be dropped. Following the offender’s last statement, a hood is placed over the offender’s head. Restraints are also applied. If the offender refuses to stand or cannot stand, he is placed on a collapse board. A determination of the proper amount of the drop of the condemned offender through the trap door is calculated using a standard military execution chart for hanging. The “drop” must be based on the prisoner’s weight, to deliver 1260 foot_pounds of force to the neck. The noose is then placed snugly around the convict’s neck, behind his or her left ear, which will cause the neck to snap. The trap door then opens, and the convict drops. If properly done, death is caused by dislocation of the third and fourth cervical vertebrae, or by asphyxiation. A button mechanically releases the trap door and escorts then move to the lower floor location to assist in the removal of the offender’s body.

Lavinia Fisher has the dubious distinction of being the first female serial killer in the United States, or at least the first one to grip to the public consciousness and earn the title. Her killings were so long ago, though — she was born c. 1792 and died in 1820 — that records about her youth and origin are lost. She and her husband owned and operated a hotel in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 19th century, and they gained notoriety when men started disappearing. (Rumors about their methods have grown with time, tossing in details like trap doors and elaborate murders, but the most likely truth is that she would poison male guests, her husband would return later in the night to finish them off, and they’d keep whatever cash or goods the guest had.) She and her hsuband were hanged, though reports were that she jumped from the gallows in a technical suicide rather than let the executioner kill her. An appropriately gruesome end.

Columbine Massacre
One of the most famous spree killings in U.S. history, involved these two students of Columbine High School embarking on a massacre at the school armed with multiple shotguns and home-made explosives. The resultant toll was thirteen dead and twenty four injured before the perpetrators committed suicide.Eric Harris was 18 years-old and Dylan Klebold was 17 years-old when they committed this infamous crime in Littleton, Colorado. They met in 1993 while they were both in Junior High school and were considered to be quite unpopular and frequently suffered from bullying at the hands of the more athletic students. In accounts after the shootings, they were known as members of a group that called themselves the ‘Trenchcoat Mafia’, but further study shows that neither of them spent much time with that group and did not show up in any group photos.
They were both self-professed computer geeks and spent a considerable amount of time on the internet. In early 1998, they were charged with breaking into a repair van and stealing tools, however, while attending their prescribed diversionary programs, they made such an impression on the juvenile officers that they were released early. Later that year, the Jefferson County Sherriff’s office investigated Harris’ website after he was accused of posting threats on the site against people with which he had had a falling out. An affidavit was created for a search warrant but never filed. Over the course of the next year, they continued to portray increasingly more violent behavior and rage in their school projects.
They created a video about executing students in the hallways of the school and their creative writing projects all displayed themes of violence and mayhem. Both kept detailed journals which described every facet of the attack, a timeline for execution of the event and potential escape routes. Neither of the boys left the school that day as they both committed suicide ending the spree. Post-event reports indicate that psychological investigations concluded that Harris was a clinical psychopath and that Klebold was a depressive and that their mental illnesses were the underlying cause for the assault.

On 27 November, 1987, 12-year-old Noosa school girl, Sian Kingi was grabbed off her push bike by Valmae Fay Beck and Barrie John Watts as she rode home from school. Beck and Watts gagged the innocent, terrified child. Watts then raped and bashed her. He then callously, and without remorse, cut her throat while his cowardly wife and mother of six watched on. Six days later, a fruit picker discovered Sian’s mutilated body, still dressed in her Year Seven Sunshine Beach School uniform, in a creek bed. The hunt for the killers and their arrest was led by Bob Atkinson, now Queensland’s police commissioner. As a result of thorough and dedicated police work by Queensland detectives, and in concert with New South Wales police, Beck and Watts were located hiding in a motel at Long Jetty on the NSW Central Coast a few weeks later. Police believe Beck and Watts are linked to the murders of Sharron Phillips, 20, in Brisbane’s outer west, Stella Mary Farrugia, 19, and Louise Bell, 10, in Adelaide. In 1995, Watts was convicted of the manslaughter of 31-year-old student, Helen Mary Feeney in late 1987. Beck gave evidence against Watts, though Ms Feeney’s body has never been found. In 2008 Beck was hospitalised and underwent heart surgery, but later died in hospital.
